The history of WindermereOrlando’s history dates back to 1838 and the height of the Seminole Wars. The U.S. Army built Fort Gatlin south of the present day Orlando City limits to protect settlers from attacks by Indians. By 1840, a small community had grown up around the Fort. It was known as Jernigan, named after the Jernigan family, who had established the first permanent settlement in the area. Jernigan had a post office, established May 30th, 1850. The Griffin Family acquired the land where Windermere is today around 1907. Windermere was located near a railroad connecting Kissimmee to Sanford Harbor, which was used as the main line of transportation for passengers and commercial goods. Because of its convenient location and serene settings on the shores on the Butler chain of lakes, Windermere grew and attracted more citizens until it incorporated in 1925. Today the city features upscale communities along with a rural small town charm that draws residents and visitors alike. Many of the luxury communities like Isleworth and Keenes Pointe features magnificent homes, some owned by the rich and famous. Excellent schools and quaint landscapes with miles of pristine lakefront make Windermere a top spot for Florida lifestyle.
