Maitland City HistoryAfter the Indian wars settler came to the shores of Lake Maitland with its springs and the vast pine forests. The area got developed with mostly citrus groves until the freeze of 1894 and 1895 devastated the citrus industry. By that time Maitland had a hotel , and a city hall and a railroad that connected Central Florida to Jacksonville. Wealthy visitors kept coming to enjoy the Florida Winter and so the city sustained the temporary loss of its citrus industry. In the 50's and 60's the development of the space coast and large employers like Martin Marietta and later Disney brought new employment opportunities to the region. In the 70's the Maitland center offered relocating companies an ideal location and inspired economical growth that drew more people to Maitland. Although being a fast growing community, Maitland has preserved its historic identity and its urban flair and is proud to have several historic sites still in existence. Great schools and nice homes in established neighborhoods make Maitland very attractive and keep housing prices going up. The closeness to Orlando and its downtown financial district together with job opportunities in the commercial corridor West of Interstate 4 has been proven to be the ideal recipe to attract affluent families and young professionals alike. Maitland has seen its share of changes as the Orlando region in general - from a small agricultural province to the emerging of a metropolitan area. Today the city of Maitland is ready for the challenges that are to come. |
